A Dirty Secret: 3 Percent of Americans Admit to Watching Porn in the Workplace

July 14, 2011|10:33 am

A survey conducted by Harris Interactive found that 64 percent of Americans watch online videos while at the workplace, and 3 percent of those viewers are watching pornography.

The most common type of online videos being watched are news clips, with 25 percent of videos viewed falling into that category, according to the survey.

That is followed by viral videos with 15 percent, and 9 percent confess to watching TV shows while at work.

The survey’s results will worry employers across the country, many of whom sign up employees to conduct any Web browsing in ethical ways, specifically prohibiting the viewing of pornography.

The survey which looked at 2,510 people aged 18 and older also revealed that men are more likely to admit to watching videos while at work with 53 percent of men and 34 percent of women reporting to having done so.

Viewing online content unrelated to work has increased with the use of mobile devices, and 61 percent of Americans reported that they think their companies should permit employees to use whatever mobile device they want, for work-related purposes of course.

Watching online videos on a mobile device affects the speed and bandwidth of the company's wireless Internet access, and yet only 9 percent of Americans suspect that their employers are “very aware” of the unethical video viewing occurring.
