A Life Worthy of the Lord

We pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord . . . (Colossians 1:10)

What in the world is Paul talking about? It seems like he is asking us to do something impossible. After all, who can honestly live a life worthy of the Lord?

What the apostle wants to see is a consistency between our behavior as Christians and the truth we claim to believe. It’s clear that Paul wishes desperately to see the gospel expand and bear much fruit. And Paul understood that this would not happen if Christians professed one thing and lived another. So the apostle’s words are a kind of moral incentive exhorting Christians to live lives which are in accordance with the gospel and the Lord himself.

A high school music teacher was preparing her choir students for an upcoming tour. In her standard briefing, she reminded them that their behavior on the choir trip was very important. “Remember,” she said, “you are representing not only our high school, but our community.” For the Christian the same is true—except that the stakes are much higher. We are representing no less than Jesus himself.

Prayer: Lord, help us to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that by our lives people may be drawn to the Savior. Amen.
