Academic Journal on Secularism: Godlessness to be Studied Carefully

The world’s first academic journal which will solely be dedicated to the study of secularism and non-religion will begin publication in January 2012.

The publication will be created through a partnership of The Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture at Trinity College Hartford Conn., and the Non Religion Secularity Research Network, according to a Trinity College press release.

The new journal seems to show a growing interest in what some evangelical leaders call the biggest threat to Christianity.

In a recent poll taken by Pew Research Center, Evangelical leaders from around the world were asked various questions about their faith. One of the questions asked was what they thought the biggest threat to Christianity was in the world today.

Surprisingly enough just over 70 percent of them attributed secularism as the biggest threat, trumping other popular answers such as Islam, sex and violence in pop culture, and evangelical leaders violating sexual morals.

The poll also showed that atheists were the most unpopular group among the leaders.

Trinity College conducted a religious identification survey back in 2008. The results were somewhat in agreement with what evangelical leaders believed, with the religious “nones,” or people who do not affiliate themselves with religion, being identified as one of the fastest growing groups in the U.S.

The “nones” were especially prevalent in the Latino communities where the number of the non-religious has quadrupled from one million in 1990 to almost four million in 2008.

But most of the “nones” did not identify themselves as atheist.

Secularism, or non religion, is the sole focus of this new journal.

“Articles [submitted] will explore the ideology and philosophy of the secular, secularism, non religion and atheism,” according to the press release.

The name of the journal will be ‘Secularism and Non Religion’.

“Its aim is to advance research regarding all of the various aspects of ‘the secular’ across societies and cultures,” the release continued.
