Alvarez vs. Golovkin Rumors: Veteran Referee Turned Analyst Thinks Alvarez will Choose Someone Else Over Golovkin

The WBC had previously and repeatedly stipulated that should Alvarez refuse to face Golovkin, the Mexican boxing superstar would be stripped of his title.

Since WBC middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez successfully defended his title against Amir Khan last May 7th via a sixth round highlight reel knockout, he has been primed to face mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin.

"GGG," who is also the WBC interim 160-pound champion, solidified his spot when he defeated Dominic Wade last April 23. The WBC had previously and repeatedly stipulated that should Alvarez refuse to face Golovkin, the Mexican boxing superstar would be stripped of his title, as per Boxing Scene.

Early this month, the council ordered a 15-day deadline for the two sides to reach an agreement.

But apparently, Alvarez may head for another direction and pick a different opponent, instead. According to long-time referee turned boxing analyst Joe Cortez, Canelo's team may be looking at fighting Canada's David Lemieux, instead.

"For me it would be the Canadian David Lemieux [to face Canelo next]," Cortez said in a Boxing Scene report. "[Golden Boy President] Oscar de la Hoya told me that he plans to have Canelo fight three fights a year, so I think with the knockout that he had over Amir Khan on Saturday - it left a great impression for future fights."

Lemieux, who is also a fighter under the Golden Boy Promotions banner like Alvarez, is a former IBF middleweight champion. Unfortunately, he dropped his title to Golovkin, when he was knocked out in the eighth round during their October 2015 fight in New York City.

But as far as the Alvarez-Golovkin goes, Cortez believes it will be happening eventually, noting that the winner of the said match-up could very well be considered as the next in line for the pound-for-pound king's throne.

"The winner of that fight will undoubtedly be the best 'pound for pound'. I think a fight between Golovkin and Canelo could generate revenues similar to what Mayweather-Pacquiao left," Cortez said.
