'American Crime' Cast News, Update: Outkast Singer Signs Up for Season 2 Role

A new casting update for the upcoming second season of ABC's hit anthology drama TV series "American Crime" indicated the signing of the Outkast singer Andre Benjamin to play the role of a "fierce" parent.

The hip hop artist, better known as Andre 3000, will take on the role of Michael Lacroix, husband to Regina King's Terri.

"They have both the financial means, as well as the acumen needed to fiercely defend their son when he becomes entangled in a scandal at an elite private school," series creator John Ridley told TV Line.

The singer-songwriter's recent collaboration with Ridley was for the 2013 Jimi Hendrix biopic titled "Jimi: All Is By My Side" where Benjamin plays as the legendary instrumentalist.

"Personally, I couldn't be more excited than to work again with André. He is an amazing individual, a true artist, and All Is by My Side is one of the reasons I was given the reins on American Crime. Folks at ABC were absolutely moved by Andre's performance in the film, and by the overall language of cinema we used in telling the story. It's fair to say American Crime might not exist were it not for our previous collaboration," Ridley added.

Benjamin is slated to appear along with returning cast members Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Richard Cabral, Elvis Nolasco and Lili Taylor in a season that will "deal with gender issues, sexual orientation and sexual identity."

"It's going to be a whole different set of circumstances," Ridley said in an earlier interview. "We're hoping that we can not only make it provocative, but humanize people as well. If there's one thing that American Crime did very well, it took issues that are generally just a headline and put faces on them. I'm hoping we can do that in the second season."

"American Crime" Season 2 premieres 2016.
