'American Horror Story' Season 5: New Season to Be Very Different From 'Freak Show' and 'Coven'

This week, "American Horror Story: Freak Show" will be ending its run on FX. However, the show has been renewed for its fifth season and is expected to be back 10 months from now. So what can fans expect from the popular horror series once it returns?

According to TVLine, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the fifth season of "American Horror Story" will be "very different."

When asked to reveal what the show's theme will be for the upcoming season, Landgraf said, "I know what it is, but I can't [say]. I have to let [series boss] Ryan [Murphy] do his thing on that. But it's very different."

"One of the things that I love so much about that is that it can be radically, radically reinvented in terms of tone, setting, period, characters, cast," he added. "I think there's going to be an unusually large reinvention in between Book 4 and Book 5 relative to say, between Book 3 [Coven] and Book 4 [Freak Show]."

One detail that the network CEO let slip was when he was asked if the show will be returning to the present day, which it has done with odd-numbered seasons.

"That's my hope, yeah," said Landgraf.

Another thing that many fans would like to know is whether Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jessica Lange will be part of next cycle, as she has previously said that her run on "Freak Show" would be her last in the series.

Many are speculating that Murphy might have less involvement in the show as he will be busy running things on the sets of FX's "American Crime Story" and Fox's "Scream Queens." It's also possible that mainstays Sarah Paulson and Emma Roberts may not be in season 5 of the series as Paulson has been cast as prosecuting O.J. Simpson attorney Marcia Clark in "American Crime Story," while Roberts has a role in "Scream Queens."

Landgraf has no information about casting for season 5, explaining, "Ryan is really, really independent in how he makes these shows and what he does. So I know the setting. I know something about the characters and something about the tone and the time period, but I don't actually know the cast yet."
