According to the report, the latest firmware however, is still available in over-the-air or through factory image download.

These factory images can be loaded onto the mentioned Google Nexus devices which in turn, will turn it to a new, out of box state.

Tech sites suggest that users may want to back up their data as the process can erase all the present data on the device.

Android Central posted a complete guide on how to flash your Nexus to the recent OS using the factory image and it goes as follows:

  • Unpack the factory image package from Google to the Android SDK/platform-tools folder on your computer
  • On your Nexus, go to Settings > Development options and switch the toggle on. Then enable USB debugging under the "Debugging" menu group.
  • Power down your phone or tablet.
  • Start up the bootloader by holding down volume up, volume down and power on your device.
  • When the menu loads, plug your Nexus into your computer.
  • On your computer, open up a command prompt or terminal window.
  • Using the command line, navigate to the Android SDK/platform-tools folder
    •     On Windows, type: flash-all.bat
    •     ... or on Mac, type: ./flash-all.sh
    •     ... or on Linux, type: ./flash-all.sh
  •     Your device will be wiped and set up with a clean install of Android 5.0.

For those who aren't that savvy when it comes to manual updating, they can wait in the coming weeks for the Android 5.0 update to filter in their Nexus and Google Play edition devices.

When that time comes, they can just automatically update their handsets and/or tablets by pressing a few buttons.
