Android L Release Date, Features: Smart Lock Screen Improvements, Redefined User Interface, Major Overhaul

Android L, set to go up against the recently released Apple iOS 8 in biggest mobile OS update since the 2008 launch, is expected to be unveiled this autumn, according to reports.

Formerly known as Android 5, Google officially introduced the Android L earlier this summer during their annual I/O conference. Although the Mountain View-based tech giant didn't announce the release date of the new Android system, they made it available for download as test betas (Developer Preview) for licensed developers.

Speculations strongly suggest that it will arrive hand in hand with the purported Nexus 8 or earlier than that, Experts Reviews reported. As for the updates, Android Geeks pointed out that one of the key features of the Android L will be about Lock Screen improvements. While previous versions like the KitKat and the later only allows user to see notifications and the time, the latest Lock Screen now enables direct interaction with the notifications.

The tech-giant also developed a system where it prioritizes to display those notifications that are deemed of utmost importance through the frequency that the user interacts with them.

Other reports pointing out to leaks and rumors showed a major makeover into the user interface and icons where "everything animates as you touch it, with objects flying into view and tapped icons rippling like puddles."

More than just the looks will be updated, however. Operating system overhauls also include a new Personalized Unlocking mode. The new security system will find familiar connectivity networks like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, locations and even "voice imprints" that automatically deactivate the lock screen protection.

Google will also be giving its mobile webpages and search some makeover. As with the keyboards, the Android L is also said to promise more personalization features.

The battery life improvement has also been mentioned by the website. They said that like Project Butter for Jelly Bean, a Project Volta will work with the Android L. It includes a new battery historian that gives off better discharge details.

"It will activate automatically when your battery drops below a certain percentage, downclocking the CPU, disabling extra features like location reporting and dimming the display," Experts Reviews added.
