Android M: Google Offers Insights About the New OS on the Recent Developers Conference in San Francisco

Google officially announced that the next version of its mobile operating system, Android, will be called "M."

The follow up of last year's L, which is now known as Lollipop, remains to be given with its edible OS nickname. Although, earlier reports, like from the Android Authority, indicated that it might be called "Macadamia Nuts Candy" or (MCN).

Regardless of the name, the first developer preview of Android M offers a great deal of information about what's coming for this year's firmware update.

A report from BBC cited features like the Android Pay and other system performance improvement tools.

The new smart wallet service gives its users the convenience of having just to use their fingerprints to make purchases both in brick-and-mortar and website stores. Third party app developer scan also integrate the new Android Pay system into their apps for in-app payments and purchases.

The system, like its short-lived predecessor Google Wallet app, also uses NFC and Host Card Emulation for its easy, tap-to-pay services.

According to Google, Android Pay will come preinstalled on AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile devices and should be accepted in over 700,000 stores in U.S.

To confirm the previous rumors, the new OS reiteration should also extend the battery life of any Android-running devices.

Thanks to the so-called "Doze," this new functionality basically improves usage by effectively managing background processes. This is done so via a motion detection system that determines if someone is using the device. Consequently, it shuts down dormant processes. However, apps like alarm and notifications will continue to function and eat up power.

The Silicon Valley giant pointed out the tests done on a Nexus 9 handset which turned out to last "up to two hours longer" than it does with the Android Lollipop.

More details about the Android M will be provided later.
