Animated 'Spider-Man' Movie Confirmed to Hit Theaters 2018, Film to Be Spearheaded by 'The Lego Movie' Directors

Sony Pictures recently announced during the CinemaCon event on Wednesday that an animated film for its popular superhero franchise property, Spider-Man, is coming soon to theaters.

An article from Variety stated that the animated movie, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas by 2018, will be spearheaded by "The LEGO Movie" and "21 Jump Street" directing duo, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as its screenplay writer and producer.

"Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the directors of The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 and 22 Jump Street, are taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with the first-of-its-kind animated Spider-Man feature, it was announced today at CinemaCon by Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing," Sony's official press release reads.

Although it is not year clear if Lord and Miller will be helming the film, Deadline believes that the entertainment studio will probably pick the two to do the job.

The news, meanwhile, coincides with the reports which pointed out to the rumoured actors eyed to play the live-action teenage Peter Parker role.

The names, according to ScreenRant, are as of follows:

  • "The Fault in Our Stars" actor Nat Wolff
  • "Ender's Game" star Asa Butterfield
  • "In The Heart of the Sea" star Tom Holland
  • "Interstellar" actor Timothee Chamalet and
  • "The Killing" star Liam James

The animated Spider-Man movie is scheduled for a July 20, 2018 release while the Spectacular Spider-Man (unofficial and unconfirmed title) will open on July 28, 2017.
