A truck driver in China has shocked the international community by running over a five-year-old boy and then reversing back over him again to make sure that the boy died to avoid paying hospital bills for the child.

The incident happened in Luzhou, western China, when the boy was walking to school.

According to the Daily Mail, witness Zhang Shifen said: “I saw the truck move back a little and then move forward again. Xiong became wrapped up in the wheel and the truck continued forward another ten yards.”

Driver Ao Yong, 35, denied reversing the truck to kill him. Police investigations revealed that the boy died on the first impact and that Yong was the first person to contact police after the incident.

Another witness said Yong asked the boy’s family “How much shall I pay?” after hitting him. He reportedly argued about the size of the damage for 7 hours with the family.

Healthcare is not free in China. Paying compensation to an accident victim is cheaper than paying for long term hospital treatment.

Last week, a two-year-old toddler girl was run over by two cars and ignored by 18 people. The incident, which was caught on camera, shamed China in front of the international community for its lack of conscience. The girl died of her injuries and the drivers have since been arrested.
