Both teams began their journey in the second qualifying round of the competition with APOEL facing Macedonian club Vardar, while Astana meeting Slovenian outfit Maribor.

APOEL advanced to the third round of the competition after a 1-1 aggregate result against Vardar, with APOEL taking the match due to away goals rule.

On the other hand, Astana faced a similar 1-0 aggregate deficit against Maribor but turned things around with a 3-1 home win that saw them take it on 3-2 aggregate.

In the third round, APOEL were tasked to face Midtdjylland from Denmark and won the first leg of the match 2-1, in the second leg, APOEL lost at home 1-0 but again took advantage of the away goals rule to move one step closer to the group stages of the competition.

Meanwhile, Astana met HJK in a two-legged affair which was decided in the second leg – after the two teams went scoreless in a draw in Finland.

Astana took advantage of playing at home to win 4-3, setting up their meeting against APOEL.

Continuing their fine European form at home, Astana welcomed APOEL in front of a hostile 30,000 screaming fans to win 1-0.

Baurzhan Dzholchiev scored the match's only goal in the 13th minute, giving Astana the slim lead before travelling for the away leg.

Now APOEL have their backs against the wall and should try to turn the tide around or their European campaign will end one round short of the group stages.
