The next iteration of Apple's first wearable tech, Apple Watch 2, is supposed to be unveiled later this year, many have speculated. However, this might not be the case at all.

South Korean publication MK News said that the upcoming smartwatch from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus maker will be "released sometime in 2016" with its specific outing timeframe still unknown.

Sources said that the Cupertino-based tech giant did consider other suppliers for the material, but eventually settled with LG, making them thier exclusive partner for next year's smartwatch.

"This strategy goes against Apple's usual M.O. of using multiple suppliers for a specific component, but sources add that Apple settled on this decision because LG' performance on the P-OLED smartwatch display market is unmatched, offering high quality products and good yield," the site wrote.

The P-OLED from LG has likely remained Apple's top pick because of the material's great flexibility and low power consumption. Other than that, the display technology allows Apple to integrate thin bezels, as well as a variety of shapes, in creating the Apple Watch 2.

LG, on its part, is a dominant player in the smartwatch market. LG should post impressive revenue in the first quarter of 2015 thanks to its exclusive collaboration with Apple.
