'Aquaman' Gets James Wan as Director

Ahead of another big superhero solo movie due the same year, Warner Brothers recently signed James Wan to helm "Aquaman." The other big superhero movie is "The Flash" which has yet to get a director.

James Wan is better known for his recent work with "Furious 7," a big box-office success, as well as his horror films, such as "The Conjuring," "Insidious" and "Saw." Aside from his directorial duties in "Aquaman," he will also reportedly supervise the script, which will be written by Kurt Johnstad of "300," according to another report in Variety.

Variety also reported that Warner Bros. has shared the first plot summary for the upcoming film. It will follow the story of Aquaman, the King of the Seven Seas and "the reluctant ruler of Atlantis." He is caught in between protecting the seas from the exploits of man and the surface world, and trying to keep control of Atlantis, a society on the verge of a revolt. He is however "committed to protecting the entire globe" so he has to find a balance between the two worlds somehow.

Greg Silverman, Warner Bros. president of creative development and worldwide production expressed how "thrilled" they are to have him on board as they "continue to expand their DC slate."

"We've been so lucky to have worked with James, first on New Line's 'The Conjuring' and now on their upcoming 'The Conjuring 2.' The 'Aquaman' film will be a major tentpole picture for us, and James' span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material."

The Cinema Blend report also speculated that Wan may need a lot of creative input on the film given that much of the film's story takes place under the ocean. This may be one reason why he was hired earlier than the director of "The Flash."

Jason Momoa, who will play the lead character, shared his approval of James Wan as director through an Instagram post, also according to the report.

"Aquaman" will star Jason Momoa and will be produced by Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder. It is set for a 2018 release.
