'Aquarius' Season Renewal News: NBC Orders Another Installment for the David Duchovny-Led Police Drama

While TV viewers are still reeling over the axing news of its fan-favorite psychological-thriller drama series "Hannibal," NBC announced its renewal for the 1960s-set police-procedural TV drama program, "Aquarius."

Duchovny stars as Samson "Sam" Hodiak, a cop bent on pinning down Charles Manson, who is connected in a case involving the disappearance of a teenage girl. Thought to be inspired by actual persons and events, the period drama marks the first ever for the network to fully release its entire first season via its digital platforms.

The digital release strategy made the show the most-watched summer series premiere on NBC.com and its companion mobile app, the NBC App. Over the course of 28 days, the show becomes the #2 most-viewed drama premiere ever on the channel, lagging only behind the James Spader-starred "The Blacklist."

According to Deadline.com, the said surprising development touted the cabler to greenlight the renewal decision.

"With its riveting drama and innovative release strategy, Aquarius has excited the critics, hooked millions of viewers and energized our summer," NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke said in a statement.

"It's no secret that the way people watch television is evolving, so we took a unique approach to how we delivered Aquarius and it's driven some record numbers for NBC Digital and helped us reach viewers who might have otherwise overlooked a great summer drama."

As for the upcoming new season, there's still no confirmation as to how many episodes it will be consisted of. Variety.com believed that it would more likely be another short order following the 13 episodes of Season 1.

Besides Duchovny, "Aquarius" features the acts of Gethin Anthony as Manson, Emma Dumont as Emma Karn, Claire Holt as Charmain Tully, and Michaela McManus as Grace Karn, among others.
