'Avatar 2' Release Date, Plot news: Sequel will focus on preserving ocean ecosystem

To say James Cameron's 2000 sci-fi film "Avatar" was successful would be an understatement. Being the first film to gross more than $2 billion, it became 2010's best-selling film, being nominated for numerous Academy Awards, and winning three of them. It's no surprise that Cameron has been signed to produce three more sequels set to be released from December 2017 to 2019.

According to Movie News Guide, the sequel is said to be focusing on an ocean setting. Cameron was quoted saying before, "We're doing 'Avatar' films now, so we're making up an ocean ecosystem for Pandora. That's gonna have less to do with the deep exploration that I've done than it has to do with my concerns about conservation of Earth's oceans. The fact that we're basically overfishing, climate change… a few degrees of temperature rise are gonna basically take out the coral reefs. All those beautiful images of the coral environments we all grew up with won't exist in 50 years at the rate we're going in terms of pumping greenhouse gases into the environment. These are the things that concern me." The movie has always tried to imbibe a lesson about saving nature, and after the last story taking place in the forest, it may be now shifting to an aqua environment.

Other than that, it's also confirmed that Sigourney Weaver will be making a comeback. Those who watched the first movie would remember that her character, Dr. Grace Augustine, died, and so when she returns in the next film, it will be as a different character. Cameron also shared his thoughts about his decisions for Weaver's return, "Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she's playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration."
