'Avatar 2' Spoilers, Release Date News Update: James Cameron Reveals Two More Sequels

While "Avatar 2" will not be released until December 2017, movie director James Cameron has announced that two more sequels are on their way.

In an interview with the Montreal Gazette, James Cameron announced that there will be a total of four "Avatar movies." "Avatar 2" is slated for a Christmas 2017 screening, the third installment will be released in 2018 and the fourth one will come out in 2019.

The movie director also mentioned that they have spent two years working on the upcoming sequel. He said they have already finished the technical development, landscapes, new worlds, stages, infrastructure, and the creatures within Pandora. They are also almost done with the writing, Morning News USA reports.

"Christmas of '17 is the target. At least, that's what we've announced," Cameron said in the interview. "But I don't consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart."

Cameron was reportedly the only screenwriter for the first "Avatar" film, which turned out to be a huge success when it was released in 2009. For the next sequels, Cameron has decided to bring in more hands to ensure continuity in the story lines of the three upcoming movies.

As of now, details on the plot of the movies are still scant, but Cameron teased that a new group of aliens will enter the scene. So far, what is confirmed is that Jake Sully and Neytiri will still be part of the sequels, the report details.

Other characters in the original movie will also come back. What is surprising is that Colonel Miles Quaritch and Dr. Augustine, who both died in the first film, are among the returning characters, the report notes.

While three "Avatar" sequels were announced, composed James Horner revealed that Cameron currently has four sets of scripts in his hands. This sparked speculations that "Avatar 4" will probably be split into two parts.

"Avatar 2" will be released around December of 2017. It will be connected to Cirque de Soleil's "Toruk," which was set 3,000 years before "Avatar."
