Azusa Pacific University kicked-off a nationwide ‘‘40 Days of Prayer’’ initiative for the revival of college campuses.

APU students committed themselves to the nationwide campus prayer initiative where college students across the nation join in an effort to pray 24 hours continuously for 40 days. Last weekend, Jan. 20-22, Azusa Pacific students were responsible for the first 48 continuous hours of prayer.

The nationwide “40 Days of Prayer” event was organized by Burning Hearts, an organization with the vision for college students to “possess Burning Hearts that are consumed with the challenge of living radical, adventurous, sold-out lives for the living, loving God.”

On the first day of the 40 day initiative, an Azusa student wrote in the Burning Heart journal, “A student … began to pray out loud. He sincerely and transparently prayed for all his fellow students who were struggling with finances, school work, family issues … he even asked God why he was on that campus. During his prayer I realize THIS STUDENT represented the heart of EVERY student across American college campuses … God has chosen him to open the 40 Days … and for that reason he had to be a student at Azusa!”

The Burning Heart 1947 Fellowship included notable Christian leaders such as Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ – a ministry responsible for about 50 million commitments to Jesus; Richard Halverson, chaplain for the U.S. senate; and Louis Evans, who pastored prominent and influential churches in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Other California universities participating in the 40-day prayer initiative include: University of California at San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene University, California Baptist University, University California at Los Angeles, Vanguard University, Biola University, University of California at Irvine, California State University, and University of California at Berkeley.

In total 30 colleges and universities nationwide will participate, beginning on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and ending on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.
