'Beetlejuice 2' Cast News, Plot Rumors, Update: Sequel Set in Present Day, Michael Keaton Reprises Role

Recent updates on one of the highly anticipated movie sequel, "Beetlejuice 2," indicated that the purported installment will be set in present day and will also see the return of Michael Keaton reprising his role.

Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" is tasked to pen the script for the next Beetlejuice movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 38-year-old scribe is "rejecting" the notion of making a reboot of the 1988 flick by Tim Burton about a "bio-exorcist" scaring away humans so that a ghost couple (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) could live peacefully in their New England home.

Instead, Grahame-Smith is writing the film to be set in the "present day" setting and that it will see the 63-year-old "Birdman" star back to the spotlight.

THR further revealed that scribe will follow suit the "less is more" advice from Keaton with regards to the beloved character by having Beetlejuice appear sparingly throughout the movie like in the original film.

Warner Bros. has been working on the follow-up for the past three years. It gained traction when director Burton came on board to helm the project.

Although the progress has been slow, the 56-year-old "Sleepy Hollow" helmer announced in December that the "Beetlejuice 2" is now "closer than ever" to becoming the next big screen offering.

Keaton, on the other hand, already said that he is "more than interested" to return to his role given that Burton will sit behind the camera.
