Walmart, which just one-upped its retail competitors such as Target and Kohl's by announcing that it will open its doors at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day to get a head start on the Black Friday frenzy, is offering some of the best deals on DVDs and Blu-Ray films at the start of the holiday shopping season.
The retailer is offering some titles for as low as $1.96. These include DVDs such as "300," "Bourne Ultimatum," "Bride Wars," "Bucket List," "Hall Pass," "He's Just Not That Into You," "Jarhead," "Jennifer's Body," and more.
Walmart is also offering Blu-Ray titles as low as $5.00 and $10.00, some of which include "300," "Clash of the Titans," "Due Date," "Fast and Furious," "Fast Five," "Inception," "Independence Day," "Lord of the Rings," "Marley and Me," "The Wizard of Oz," and "Quantum of Solace."
Many other popular retailers, such as Toys "R" Us, Best Buy and Macy's, are opening their doors at midnight this Black Friday and expanding their hours in an effort to capitalize on one of the biggest sales days of the year in a poor economy.
Walmart Chief Merchandising Officer Duncan MacNaughton said part of the reason the store chose to open so early was because customers said they preferred to shop late at night rather than early in the morning.
"Our customers told us they would rather stay up late to shop than get up early, so we're going to hold special events on Thanksgiving and Black Friday," he said in a statement. "We'll have this season's hottest gifts at prices only Walmart can provide. And by sharing our Black Friday specials earlier than ever, we hope to make buying decisions easier for parents working hard to give their families the Christmas they deserve."
Marking the beginning of the holiday shopping season, Black Friday is known to be a day of chaos as shoppers scramble to scoop up the best sales while they can. In 2008, a Long Island, N.Y., Walmart made headlines after an employee was trampled to death by a stampede of hundreds of people as they rushed through the retailer's front doors at the store's opening on Black Friday.
