'Boardwalk Empire' Season 5 Release Date, Spoilers: Series Finale Will Make Sure 'No One Goes Quietly'

HBO's hit American period crime drama TV series "Boardwalk Empire" is slated to launch its upcoming season 5 premiere on Sunday, Sept. 7, 9/8c. The date has been revealed in the official teaser trailer released earlier this month.

Although season 4 was hailed by critics to be the show's best, creator Terence Winter promises that the next one will be even better and that it will be its last.

This announcement has been made at the recent Television Critic's Association press tour in Pasadena January this year.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire. After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion," Winter said.

The series, which is set during the Prohibition era, premiered its pilot episode on Sept. 19, 2010. It features Steve Buscemi, who plays a powerful politician named Enoch "Nucky" Thompson; Kelly Macdonald, playing a mistress, later the wife of Nucky; Michael Shannon as Nelson Van Alden, who also goes by the alias of George Mueller, among others.

Based on the book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson, the show earned several award nominations like Outstanding Drama Series for the Emmys and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble for the Screen Actors Guild.

According to Hollywood Hills, "Boardwalk Empire" Season 5: Episode 1 will be entitled "Golden Days for Boys and Girls," written by Howard Korder and directed by Tim Van Patten.
