Boxing News 2016: Amir Khan Compares Canelo Fight To De La Hoya Vs. Pacquiao

Since the announcement of the new middleweight title fight between champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Amir Khan was made, it has been marred by criticism from fans.

The said fight will take place on May 7 at the newly constructed T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. As agreed upon, the bout will be at a catchweight of 155-pounds, five pounds below the 160-pound limit. Alvarez will be putting his WBC middleweight belt on the line, a title he won from four-division world champion Miguel Cotto when they fought in November.

Being the more decorated fighter, Alvarez is easily favored to emerge victorious against Khan. However, the British boxer believes he should not be counted out, as he believes he can make history by defeating the Mexican boxing sensation.

"King" Khan spoke about it in detail and compared his situation to when Manny Pacquiao fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2008, in a report by Edward Chaykovsky for Boxingscene.

During the said fight, Pacquiao was the underdog, and was deemed too small to face De La Hoya.

"When Manny Pacquiao fought Oscar de la Hoya, people thought he would get destroyed," Khan said. "He turned it around."

"I'm at my peak and I'm going to show the world how good Amir Khan is," he continued. "I can take easy fights and make money. I don't want to do that. I want to leave my mark."

The 25-year-old Alvarez currently holds a record of 46-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout. A former WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine light middleweight champion, he holds notable victories over Josesito Lopez, former IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron, and three-division world champion Shane Mosley.

Khan, on the other hand, is a former unified WBA and IBF light welterweight champion, as well as the current WBC Silver welterweight champion.

He currently holds a record of 31-3, with 19 victories by knockout, and holds notable wins against two-division world champions Zab Judah, Marcos Maidana, and Devon Alexander, as well as former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri.
