Brooklyn Nine Nine: Andy Samberg and Michael Schur Discuss Casting

September 19, 2013|8:30 am

Fox debuted a new police comedy entitled "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" Tuesday. The show is helmed by stars Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher, who play foils of one another -- Samberg as the goofy prankster and Braugher as the no-nonsense leader.

The "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" staff recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the show.

It seems there was little doubt in everyone's mind that Samberg was the right actor for the role of prankster Jake, as producer Michael Schur explained.

"We found out Andy had left SNL, and suddenly it was like, 'Oh, that could work.' We went to Fox and said, 'What would you think about Andy Samb-?' and before we finished his name they were like, 'Yes, go get him!'" Schur told Entertainment Weekly. "We pitched the show to him, and as we were explaining the character in this verbose, florid way, he said, 'Oh, it's comedy McNulty (a character from "The Wire").' We were like, 'Yes … that's the two-word version of our rambling description.' We said later, 'He's totally the right guy for the job, because he was able to distill it in that way.'"

And Samberg is enjoying his time with the show. He particularly enjoys working along side Andre Braugher.

"Andre is actually incredible because he has comedy timing and he's done comedy [recently as a star of TNT's Men of a Certain Age], but he's also Julliard-trained. I mean, he's like for real. He could get an Oscar at any moment. All someone has to do is cast him," Samberg said of his co-star.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" airs Tuesdays on Fox at 8:30 p.m.
