'Call of Duty: Black Ops III' Open Beta on Aug. 19, New Zombies Mode Revealed

Treyarch's upcoming first-person shooter video game "Call of Duty: Black Ops III" will go on open beta on Aug. 19. The announcement was made by Treyarch on July 9, through Twitter, saying that the beta will first be available on the PlayStation 4.

While the beta will initially be available on the PS4, the developer also said that it will eventually be made available on the other console, the Xbox One and the PC, according to an IGN report.

The game, which is being published by Activision and is a sequel to "Call of Duty: Black Ops II," is slated to be released later this year, on Nov. 6, 2015.

Gamers who wish to take part in the beta are required to pre-order the game. The beta was earlier revealed by Treyarch, in another IGN report. It was described as a multi-player beta.

"The public MP beta will be available for anyone who pre-orders the game. We want people to play it before it launches. The team is so excited to offer this opportunity, which is something the franchise hasn't done since 'Call of Duty: World at War,'" studio head Mark Lamia said.

This report about the open beta confirms earlier leaked images from the game's marketing materials about the upcoming pre-order beta.

In another report in Time, the game developer also revealed the game's Zombie mode details through a trailer also released on July 9, which was shared at the San Diego Comic-Con. The trailer revealed the mode called "Shadows of Evil" which offers a new survival co-op mode. Featuring a celebrity cast which includes Jeff Goldblum, Heather Grahan, Neal McDonough, Ron Perlman and Robert Picado, "the film-noir narrative follows four unwitting characters who are tasked with uncovering secret and challenges set out for them by the mysterious Shadow Man."

The new co-op mode will be available when the full game is released on Nov. 6.
