Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Rematch Rumors: To Happen in 2018?

After the epic bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin ended in a controversial split-draw over the weekend, rumors of a rematch swiftly swirled online. The thought of seeing the two fighters square-off anew may not be far-fetched, after all.

The possibility of a rematch was floated by boxing legend and Golden Boy Promotions' Oscar De La Hoya.

To add substance to seeing the Mexican Alvarez and the Kazakhstani Golovkin, Forbes reported that the two expressed their openness to the idea. "Yes, of course. Obviously, yes. if the people want it, yes," Alvarez responded when asked by HBO's Max Kellerman.

Golovkin likewise echoed the same sentiments. "Of course I want a rematch. I wanted a fight. I want a true fight," he said. Still, nothing is set in stone, especially on the side of Alvarez. The 27-year-old fighter said that he will spend some time off before he finally decides.

"Right now I'm going to take some time off and we'll sit down with our team and decide what's next. I just want to enjoy this," he stated.

Dubbed as "The Real Fight," the Canelo–Golovkin match ended in a split decision draw, after 12 punishing rounds. One of the three judges called the match in favor of Golovkin, 115–113. The other scored a tie at 114-–114. Judge Adalaide Byrd, the third and controversial one, saw Alvarez winning decisively, 118–110.

As the final bell rang, the two were lifted by their trainers, each one believing that they had won the bout. With a tightly-contested match that has been a visual treat for boxing fans, a sequel may work in favor of the two warriors.

Will last Saturday's match stoke the fire of an epic rivalry? Will a rematch be enough to settle the score, once and for all? Only time will tell for now.
