'Captain America: Civil War' News, Spoilers: Film Is Edgier, Darker than Other Marvel Films, Directors Say

According to its directors, the much-anticipated third "Captain America" stand-alone will be unlike any other Marvel film ever made.

In an interview for the "Captain America: Civil War" cover story of the latest issue of SFX Magazine, Joe and Anthony Russo spoke about how the upcoming film is tonally different than others in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and what sets it apart from its predecessor, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" (2014).

"Tonally, this is unlike any Marvel movie we've seen before," Joe said (via ComicBook.com). "It's certainly got more edge and, on an emotional level, darker things happen in this movie than people have experienced in other Marvel films."

According to Anthony, though "Civil War" and "The Winter Soldier" are related in terms of tone and texture, the central dynamic of the films are different. While the Russos considered "The Winter Soldier" a political thriller, they reportedly set up "Civil War" as more of a psychological thriller.

Joe also spoke about wanting the film to be funnier than its predecessor. As he told the magazine, though there will definitely be some dark and gritty moments, the directors wanted viewers "to laugh and cry and be scared and be happy."

"That's better than just crying," Joe said, adding, "Hopefully we balance the movie properly so when you watch, it moves seamlessly between those tones."

Meanwhile, "The Walking Dead" alum Jon Bernthal, who recently debuted as the Marvel Comics character Frank Castle/The Punisher in the second season of Netflix's "Daredevil," said that he was impressed by Tom Holland's persistence in trying to bag the role of Spider-Man in the MCU.

Bernthal, who co-stars with Holland in the period drama "Pilgrimage," told Complex, "I saw him go through the process of trying to win that role."

"He fought for it. He just went out and got it. That's not an easy feat," the actor said.

Holland will make his big screen debut as the newest incarnation of Spider-Man in "Captain America: Civil War," which is scheduled for release on May 6.
