  France's former first lady Carla Bruni has recently voiced her support of same-sex marriage in France.

Carla Bruni, wife of France's former president Nicolas Sarkozy, has voiced her support of the legalization of same-sex marriage in France.

"I'm rather in favor because I have a lot of friends – men and women – who are in this situation and I see nothing unstable or perverse in families with gay parents," Bruni, a former supermodel and singer, told the December edition of French Vogue.

Bruni, 44, went on to explain that her husband, Sarkozy, who served as the 23rd president of the French Republic from 2007 to 2012, opposes gay marriage for political reasons.

"My husband is opposed for reasons linked to his political vocation, because he sees people as groups of thousands rather than people we know personally," Bruni told the popular fashion magazine.

Sarkozy is a part of France's UMP party, which is currently fighting a socialist party push for the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2013.

In a February 2012 interview with Le Figaro magazine, Sarkozy said that in spite of the socialist party nudging for him to change his view on same-sex marriage, he did not believe in the re-definition of family.

"In troubled times, when our society needs to keep its bearings, I don't think that it is necessary to blur the image of this essential social institution that is marriage," Sarkozy said.

"I know that there exists, in fact, particular situations with men and with women who assume their parental roles perfectly. But they do not lead me to think that it is necessary to inscribe in law a new definition of family," he added.

Same-sex marriage is currently illegal in France, although the government reportedly plans to legalize it by next year.

The country remains divided on the issue, however, as earlier in November, 100,000 protesters organized by Catholic groups, gathered in Paris to protest against same-sex marriage legalization.
