'Carnage' Sheds Interesting Light on Bullying

Parents coping with children who have been involved with bullying, either as perpetrators or victims, undergo many emotional reactions. In Roman Polanski’s adaptation of the hit play, “God of Carnage,” a fight between two young boys results in an even bigger conflict between the parents.

In the film, two sets of parents meet to discuss the bullying-related shuffle between their sons. The dark-humored plot centers on what a psychologist at New Life Christian Counseling Center calls “a major problem in schools today.”

Dr. Brian Campbell of the counseling center in Lake Mary, Fla. spoke with The Christian Post saying that bullying is often ignored or overlooked by school authorities, and that many children who suffer from bullying are often too afraid to tell anyone about it.

“The vast majority of children will experience bullying some time during childhood,” said the psychologist. “I can trace many personality disorders back to middle school where kids were bullied.”

The gravity of childhood bullying transcends many ages, and can also affect the parents of victims. If bullying is reported in a school, often times the parents of the children involved are summoned to a meeting.

In the new film “Carnage,” parents of the fighting boys convene to discuss the actions that transpired between their sons. As they progressively become more hostile and child-like, each adult defends their own son over the matter as prejudices, hypocrisy, and selfishness surface.

The complex storyline in “Carnage” is expected to attract many moviegoers, and the film sees a star-studded cast including Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, and Christoph Waltz.

The film premieres Friday, Dec. 16. Watch the trailer here.
