Carolina Panthers NFL Trade Rumors: Team Not Ruling Out Drafting a Running Back

Earlier this month, Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman hinted that they were going to select a running back in the draft. But with Pro Bowler Jonathan Stewart now under contract through 2018, are they still going to go through with their plan?

After signing Stewart to a contract extension, pundits have pointed out that Gettleman still hasn't ruled out selecting a running back with the eight overall pick of the draft and they believe Louisiana State University's Leonard Fournette is still on the team's radar.

Stewart is used to operating as the primary running back, but he happens to be on board with the team's decision to draft a young player who can help out in the backfield.

"I mean, it's a good thing. You always want fresh legs. Fresh legs mean a lot, especially in the fourth quarter. Having somebody potentially come in here ... there are a lot of good running backs in this draft class, a lot of talent. Definitely open arms to get somebody in here that wants to win and understands that. We're better as a fist than we are as an open hand," he told the Panthers' official website.

The 30-year-old Stewart is still one of the best players in his position, but he is entering his 10th season with the Panthers and he is not getting any younger. An infusion of youth may be needed this season and another running back can take some load off Stewart's shoulders.

Meanwhile, a lot of observers think the Panthers should definitely go after Fournette in the draft, but Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer disagrees. He believes the team should go with former Alabama tight end O.J. Howard with the eight overall pick. Howard does have the strength and speed to do well in the big leagues and he will be a nice fit with the Panthers if they decide to draft him.
