Carolina Panthers Roster News: Team Expects DE Charles Johnson to Be Activated

There's good news for the Panthers heading deeper into the season when defensive end Charles Johnson is finally going back to action after a Week 3 injury. The hamstring issue required him to miss eight games, though he believes he felt ready to play in just a couple of weeks after getting the injury.

Being back on the active roster is definitely a welcoming sight for the Panthers hoping to make a final push before the playoffs. "I thought I could come back sooner but at the same time these eight weeks helped me get my leg stronger and I feel like I'm 100 percent," the Panthers defensive stalwart said. "It was frustrating at first, but when you're winning that makes a lot of things easier. I just tried to maintain my poise," he added.

The 29-year-old, though, is more than ready to run the field, considering that he's been participating in team practices for the past couple of weeks. Head coach Ron Rivera told reporters that his guy is prepared to return. "He's worked very hard, he's been working on his conditioning, as well as his rehab," the coach added.

The hamstring injury has been bothering Johnson even before the start of the season. Currently in his fifth year with the team in a six-year contract worth $76 million, he currently ranks second in the franchise's all-time sack list.

The nine-year veteran is no doubt the most important figure in the Panthers defensive line and the team didn't want to rush things, making sure the defensive end is good to go for the rest of the season and the playoffs. In order to address his absence, the team added Jared Allen from Chicago and relied heavily on two-year veteran Kony Ealy.

And with a 10-0 record, the Panthers surely had the room to take it easy on Johnson. What remains to be seen though is what kind of impact he'll have in his return to a team that's been winning without him.
