'Chicago Fire' Season 3 Spoilers: Who Lives and Dies in Season Premiere?

At the end of season two, "Chicago Fire" fans were left wondering who was still alive and who was dead after an explosion occurred while the entire crew of Firehouse 51 was inside an abandoned building. Expect plenty of tears when season three premieres in the fall, as death has been guaranteed, as have plenty of other surprises.

"Not everybody makes it out of that building," showrunner Matt Olmstead confirmed to TV Guide. "And then certainly what people deal with in terms of the loss of whomever that character is, that's definitely what we're dealing with in the first episode and beyond."

Who could it be, then?

Otis will likely survive, given that his character has really grown but is not one of the frontrunners. "Mouch" is also likely a survivor, given his personality and again, his lack of becoming a frontrunner. Lieutenant Severide survives, according to multiple reports, as does Lieutenant Casey, who becomes engaged to Dawson. And Mills has a major storyline with choosing between the fire or police department, which would rule him out. Chief Boden was outside the building when it exploded, frantically calling for help. He definitely survives.

"This will be the death of a character that you're much more invested in," Olmstead said. "It's this family that takes a hit, and how do you come back from it? It's been done before, but not to this extent. The loss of a main character is a big deal."

"As we've established on the show, he (Severide) is prone to going off on his own and having a few cocktails when things don't go his way," Olmstead told TVLine. It "might cause a problem with him and Lindsay. The thing we like about him and Lindsay is they're cut from the same cloth. They don't judge each other. No one's ragging on the other person for not being available. They're really similar."

Those who could possibly perish include Cruz, Capp, or, most likely, Herrmann or Shay. Herrmann is a family man who just welcomed a baby last season and seemed to finally be getting ahead in life. Shay could also be one of the victims; she has seemingly settled down and returned to Firehouse 51.

Viewers will have to wait until Sept. 23 to learn the fate of those in Firehouse 51.
