Christian Bale was almost unrecognizable as he traveled through LAX on Monday with his family.

The Dark Knight actor was seen looking completely different to how fans are used to seeing him, sporting a shaved head, and also a lot more weight than usual.

The actor has taken on a new look for his new film American Hustle, meaning he had to shave his head and grow a bit of a gut to portray his character in the movie. He will play Melvin Weinberg in the new movie.

The British actor has become known for getting deep into his roles, often completely changing his appearance for each character he takes on.

He was seen in 2004 film The Machinist, for which he lost more than 60 pounds to play the part of Trevor Resnik.

He took on a more buff figure for his roles in Terminator Salvation, and the Batman trilogy of films.

However, Bale looked completely different for his part as boxer Dicky Eklund in The Figher, where he portrayed a drugged up, washed out boxer, struggling to do the right thing for his younger brother as he works his way to the top. The actor won an Oscar for his role in that movie.

Bale is known to love the challenge of taking on intense roles, and that has been seen throughout his career. At one point he went on a huge rant at a worker on the set of Terminator Salvation after he was distracted by the worker while he was getting himself hyped up for a particularly intense scene.

He was forced to make an apology for that outburst after a recording of the rant went viral, leaving many fans shocked at the way he treated his colleague.

However, he won many plaudits for offering his support to those in the wake of 2012's Colorado shootings. The actor visited some of those affected in the aftermath of a shooting at the premiere show of his film The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado.
