Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Rumors: Deron Williams Wants to Play for the Cavaliers

A lot of teams were busy making minor trades in the final hours before the trade deadline, but the Cleveland Cavaliers didn't make a move to acquire a playmaker. Perhaps they knew they didn't have to pull the trigger on a deal because a solid point guard was going to land on the waiver wire.

Well, it didn't take long for the Dallas Mavericks to waive Deron Williams after they failed to trade him. He can now sign with anyone once he clears waivers, and ESPN has reported that he intends to join the Cavs.

Williams is no longer an elite point guard, but he can be a solid backup. His court-vision and passing remain top-notch, and he will give the Cavs another capable ball handler who can take the pressure off LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. The Mavs decided to let Williams leave so they can hand over the reins to point guard Yogi Ferrell. He played well this season, but he missed a number of games due to injuries.

Before they faced the New York Knicks on Thursday, Cavs coach Tyronn Lue was asked about Williams and he had this to say, according to ESPN:

"I always liked D-Will. He's a good player. Anytime you have a guy who is an All-Star, he's a great talent. So he can make the plays, he's a great pick-and-roll player, he can shoot the basketball. He has size, so you can switch 1 through 4 with him defensively. He can post smaller guards. So I've always been a big fan of D-Will."

Williams could be on his way to Cleveland, but he might not be the only veteran heading there. Reports note that the Cavs are also keeping their eye on center Andrew Bogut, and they are ready to pounce once the Philadelphia 76ers waive him. They are going to have some competition for Bogut's signature, though, because the Houston Rockets are reportedly interested in him as well.
