Colo. Woman Claims Jesus Told Her to Lay Newborn on Train Tracks

A Colorado woman is claiming Jesus Christ told her to lay a newborn girl on train tracks as a train prepared to depart the Pueblo station last week.

Witnesses watched with horror on Feb. 14 at around 2:15 p.m. when they saw 31-year-old Jennifer Sloan allegedly place a newborn on the tracks in front of a train preparing to depart from the north end of Pueblo, near 29th and Lowell. Passengers reportedly began knocking on the first car of the train to alert the conductor of the baby on the tracks, while others chased after Sloan, stopping her and keeping her at the station until police arrived.

The train's conductor alerted two city workers of the situation, and the workers rescued the newborn from the tracks. It remains uncertain if Sloan is the mother of the child.

Police said Sloan was incoherent when she was taken into custody. The 31-year-old said she would like to legally proceed without a lawyer, and also told authorities that she believes Jesus Christ took the two-week-old infant from her arms and placed her on the tracks in front of the train.

One witness, Eduardo Fontes, told CBS Denver that at first he couldn't believe his eyes, thinking rather that the small bundle lying on the tracks was a doll and not a living human being. "I thought ... there's no way this could be a baby. I said, 'This has to be a doll.' She has to be in on some joke," Fontes told the local station.

"I was freaking out," the witness continued. "On the first car I saw, I knocked on their window and was like, 'Hey man, this woman just left her baby. The baby is on the tracks right next to the train.'

The Pueblo Police Department released a statement relaying witness accounts of the incident and providing an update on the newborn's health.

"Other witnesses informed officers that there were trains stopped in both directions when they observed a female drop her baby on the tracks prior to running away," the statement read. "A pair of city workers in the area immediately retrieved the baby from the tracks. The two week old infant girl appeared to be okay, but was transported to a local hospital for a more thorough examination."

Sloan has been charged with attempted first degree murder for her alleged actions.
