Commemoration of Rev. Charles G. Adams' 50 Years in the Ministry

On November 19, 2004, Rev. Dr. Charles G. Adams, Pastor of the Hartford Memorial Church in Detroit, will celebrate 50 years in the ministry. The celebration will take place at the Troy Marriott where over 800 ministers, scholars, theologians, and congregation members from around the nation have made reservations to commemorate Adams and his ministry.

This day-long celebration is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., beginning with a symposium led by Dr. James Cone, Union Theological Seminary, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie of the AME Church, Dr. Carlyle Stewart, Hope United Methodist Church, and Dr. Preston Williams, Harvard Divinity School, evaluating the work and ministry of Dr. Adams and moderated by Dr. Bruce Rigdon of Ecumenical Theological Seminary.

The keynote speech will be delivered by noted historian and Harvard professor, Dr. Everlyn Brooks Higginbotham, at the Commemorative Luncheon followed by a panel discussion led by prominent leaders from across the ecumenical spectrum with Dr. Lawrence Carter, Morehouse College, moderating.

The celebration will continue with Gala banquet in the evening as Dr. Peter Gomes, Harvard Professor and Minister of the Memorial Church, will be the keynote speaker and Dean William Graham of Harvard Divinity School will bring special greetings.

Sunday services on November 21, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, are assumed to round out the celebration as Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham preaches the 7:30 a.m. Service and Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook preaches the 11 a.m., in which all proceeds will go to the newly established Charles G. Adams Legacy Foundation that will preserve the many sermons and writings of Dr. Adams as well as provide support for young seminarians and schools of theology.

Charles G. Adams, native Detroiter, is a graduate of Cass Technical High School, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA. For seven years he was pastor of Concord Baptist Church in Boston, Massachusetts and has recently celebrated his 35th Anniversary as pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church that has grown to 10,000+ members. Having been sited as one of the greatest preachers in the country by Ebony Magazine, Dr. Adams is also the recipient of 12 honorary doctorate degrees and has taught and preached throughout the country and around the globe.
