'Constantine' Season 1 Episode 8 Recap, Spoilers: 'The Saints of Last Resorts' Has Twists

On last Friday's episode of "Constantine," John gets a visit from an old flame, and the two of them work together to save two abducted babies from the clutches of a baby-eating demon.

"The Saints of Last Resorts" starts with a demon sneaking into a convent to kill a woman, who just had her baby, and then the demon steals the infant. Anne Marie, a nun from a convent in Mexico, calls up Constantine for help. Before he leaves, he tells Zed about Anne Marie and said that they dated before. John also tells Zed that Anne Marie hates him, so she might have been desperate to need his help.

Upon his arrival in Mexico City, John is surprised to find out that Anne Marie is now a nun. She takes John to the room where the baby was kidnapped, and he cast some runestones, which ignites immediately. John sees this as a sign that the demon is covering its tracks and the baby is still alive. Hugo, the baby's father, tries to dig up the placenta in the spot where he buried it, but it isn't there. The tree where it's buried grows flesh fruit, and when John cuts into one, it spurts blood so he thinks that one of biblical Eve's evil sisters may have taken the baby.

Meanwhile, a cop named Diego gets a phone call and learns that another baby was taken. It so happens that the baby is Hugo's grandchild—his estranged son got his girlfriend pregnant, and the baby was taken. While John is in the middle of a spell which will show him the face of the demon, Sister Luisa appears to get him, but upon glancing at the fountain it reveals the face of Luisa as the demon.

John tells Anne Marie and Hugo that the demon Lamashtu likes to feed on babies and is targeting his blood line for some reason. They visit Hugo's grandmother Pia, who was born in Chile. Pia says that the Brujeria are back, and that they are ancient, powerful warlocks that "wielded a magic the world hasn't seen since God turned on the lights." She reveals that her grandfather was one, and that her father escaped to protect his young family.

John thinks that Lamashtu is after Hugo's blood, and he injects Hugo's blood into a chicken and places a glamour spell on it to make it look like a baby. Anne Marie offers the "baby" to Lamashtu, and the demon takes it. Just then, Hugo appears around the corner and shoots at the demon. Chas goes one way and Anne Marie and John go another.

John and Anne Marie find the two babies in cages. They get the babies but the demon appears and stops them. John tells the demon that the La Brujeria wanted the babies unharmed, but unless he knows what the plan is, he's going to kill the baby that he's holding. Lamashtu tells John that in exchange for the babies, La Brujeria promised to expand her domains on earth and that they have figured out a way to break the boundaries between heaven and earth.

John pulls out an amulet, chants, and the demon is sucked into a blue portal. Another demon appears, and Anne Marie shoots John so the demon will attack him, takes the babies, and leaves him there bleeding.

"Constantine" airs Fridays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
