Controversial abortionist LeRoy Carhart in Germantown, Md., has sent another patient to the hospital with life-threatening complications, pro-life group Operation Rescue revealed on Wednesday. The group is urging officials to shut down his clinic.
"It appears that Carhart was once again conducting surgeries on women in a fatigued state, as he is known to do. He brags of never taking a day off. At the age of 72, we believe he is endangering women with his irresponsible behavior, and this latest medical emergency in Germantown is more evidence of that," said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue.
According to Operation Rescue, an ambulance arrived Tuesday afternoon at Carhart's Germantown Reproductive Health Services abortion clinic and transported a female patient to a local hospital. According to the pro-life group, he saw as many as 16 abortion patients that day.
Operation Rescue recalled a number of other incidents in the past couple of years where patients under Carhart's care have suffered abortion complications, and said that medical emergencies have become more frequent at his clinic in recent months. The group has filed a complaint with the Maryland Board of Physicians, calling for Carhart's medical license to be suspended and an investigation to be launched into the recent cases of abortion injuries.
The pro-life group suggested that it is Carhart's ties with Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius which are keeping him in business and keeping medical boards in Maryland and Nebraska from holding the abortionist accountable for those incidents.
"I suspect that medical board officials fear political fallout or even retribution from Secretary Sebelius if they take significant action against Carhart," Newman conjectured. "If that is the case, they are responsible for the injury or death of at least six women that we know about in the past few months. It's time for them to put politics aside and exercise their duty to protect the public from Carhart and his dangerous abortion practices."
Carhart has been the target of a number of pro-life groups in the area who have been campaigning for him to stop his practice. Maryland Coalition for Life has drawn together thousands of people in prayer events against the abortionist.
In May 2013, Live Action released an undercover video on Carhart performing second trimester abortions at his Nebraska clinic and second and third trimester abortions at his Maryland clinic, as part of its "Inhuman: Undercover in America's Late-Term Abortion Industry" series.
In the video, the abortion doctor is caught describing how abortion works: "It's like putting meat in a Crock-Pot … It gets soft – like, mushy – so you push it through."
