CP World Report: The Republican Primaries, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, Joe Paterno dead at 85

The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada is supporting the call for a national discussion on the legal definition of a human being. Canada’s Criminal Code states that a child in the womb is not human, yet there are complexities and grey areas. Legal Counsel for the EFC Faye Sonier said that Parliament needs to examine these provisions; consider their historical roots; and, debate whether they make sense in the twenty-first century. Two members of Parliament Stephen Woodworth from Kitchener Center and Jeff Watson from Essex have called for a full examination of Canada’s laws in this regard and they are supported by the EFC.

With the diminishing role of religion in schools North American-wide, we brought you a story out of Prince Edward Island of one parent’s challenge to the long-time tradition of the Gideon Bible being distributed to grade 5 students. Well the Prince Edward Island School Board decided to continue the tradition afterall. But….now…a challenge in New York City: Religious leaders are protesting a decision to bar all houses of worship from renting space in public school buildings. The faith groups have until Feb. 12 to leave or face eviction. According to protestors, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decree came without any organized objections or a court order.

Following the departure of hundreds of thousands of people, mostly Christians, to South Sudan, as part of last July’s secession from the Arab dominated north, Christians are facing growing threats. Sudan’s Ministry of Guidance and Religious Endowments has threatened to arrest church leaders if they participate in evangelistic activities and do not provide their names and contact information. This follows President Omar al-Bashir’s announcement that the country’s constitution will be more in accordance with the tenets of Sharia law.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno—who was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal-- has died at 85 of lung cancer. He won 409 games and more than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL. Many of his colleagues have referred to him as the greatest football coach in the history of the game. When he was fired, it caused riots on campus.
