'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' spoilers: New series is a musical

The CW has a new musical comedy-drama series called "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." The series was originally written and developed for Showtime but was not picked up by the network.

The series centers on Rebecca Bunch, a young successful lawyer living in Manhattan who is single and ready to mingle. She sees an old flame from summer camp named Josh Chan, and after getting inspiration from a donut ad, suddenly decides to follow him to West Covina, California.

The upcoming show stars Rachel Bloom, a YouTube star who does roles in "Robot Chicken" as the crazy Rebecca. Vincent Rodriguez III will play Josh, the ex that Rebecca follows. Other cast members include Santino Fontana as Greg Serrano, Donna Lynne Champlin as Paula, Vella Lovell as Heather, Rebecca's neighbor and Pete Gardner as Darryl, Rebecca's new boss.

Actor Tony Plana from "Ugly Betty" will recur in the new series. He will play Emilio Serrano, the father of Greg who is divorced. He lives with his son and his health is slowly failing. He will give his son advice about the new girl in town.

The new series would have run for 30 minutes without ads on Showtime, but will now run 13 minutes longer on the CW. The show has been toned down for the network and it has significantly less profanity than before.

There will be around three to four musical numbers per episode, which will cover every genre of music. There will be tap dancing as actress Rachel Bloom promised, because everyone in the cast has a few Broadway veterans who can tap dance.

Bloom was asked about the word "Crazy" in the title and she defended the use of the word. "We knew we wanted to start with a character that was in a bad place and looked at Josh Chan as an escape. It's very important that this is not a SNL character; this is someone struggling with issues. We're going to explore that throughout the series," she said.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will premiere on Oct. 12.
