'Criminal Minds' Season 4 Spoilers and News: J.J. Shaken Up by Difficult Case; Thomas Gibson Exits Series

Before Thomas Gibson could make his final appearance in the series, a new actor was signed on to fill in his absence.

An exciting premiere greeted the fans of "Criminal Minds" Season 12 last week. One of the highlights is Mr. Scratch's return to the series as the Crimson King. Although he was able to escape from the Behavioral Analysis Unit, his escape paved the way for the introduction of Fugitive Task Force leader Luke Alvez as the replacement of Derek Morgan in the BAU.

Final appearance in the series

In the second episode of "Criminal Minds" Season 12, Thomas Gibson, as BAU head Aaron, will be making his last appearance in the show after being unexpectedly fired due to an onset altercation with a writer/producer. The focus of the episode though, will be on FBI Agent Jennifer Jareau (A.J. Cook) who will be affected when a case she is working on hits a little too close to home.

Too close to home

Based on the synopsis of episode 2 of "Criminal Minds" Season 12, a visibly shaken J.J. will be coming home after a rough case. She will be seen breaking down and relates to her husband about the abduction of two children.

The trailer for the same episode of "Criminal Minds" Season 12 shows that J.J.'s life will be in danger. She is working with Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) and Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) trying to catch a serial killer who also commits arson. Things turn for the worse with J.J. when she is walking to the direction of a horrific scream and an explosion happens.

Playing with fire

David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) informs the rest of the team that the unknown subject is trying to perfect his fantasy. The serial killer using fire will certainly make it difficult for the BAU to catch him. But, somehow Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) is able to determine in the episode of "Criminal Minds" Season 12 that the serial killer's endgame will be in Los Angeles.

Neither the episode synopsis nor the promo trailer provide fans an idea on how Hotch will exit "Criminal Minds" Season 12. It was previously reported that he will have a temporary assignment somewhere else and Prentiss will lead the team in Hotch's absence.

New series regular

The latest development for "Criminal Minds" Season 12 however, is that Damon Gupton has been signed on as a series regular to fill the void of Gibson's departure. Although it is also being made clear that the character Gupton will be playing will not directly replace Hotch as the leader of BAU. Spoilers say that the new unit head will be revealed later in the season and is expected to come from within the BAU.

Gupton's character will be named Special Agent Stephen Walker and comes from the FBI counterintelligence division called Behavioral Analysis Program. He is said to be a seasoned profiler with spy-hunting skill. Walker is said to be making his first appearance in "Criminal Minds" Season 12 in episode 8.

In the meantime, episode 2 of "Criminal Minds" Season 12 will air on October 5 on CBS. It is titled "Sick Day".
