Cross-Country Walks for Life Conclude in Washington, D.C.

Students concluded their three month journeys this weekend, having traversed 3,000 miles across the U.S. and spread a pro-life message to many people along the way.

Around 40 college students joined in the 11th consecutive summer walks sponsored by Crossroads, an organization founded in 1995 in response to Pope John Paul II’s call for America’s youth to establish a culture of life.

In May, three groups began their journeys across the nation from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle to Washington, D.C. The groups concluded their walks on Saturday with a rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building, featuring keynote speaker Austin Ruse, the president of the Culture of Life Foundation.

Throughout their journeys, participants endured many difficulties, including heat, hurricanes, injuries, and some opposition to their message. Overall, the people they encountered, estimated to be over 250,000 in churches alone, were supportive of their mission to promote a culture of life.

Over the weekend, the walkers continued to speak at churches in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Their message is not only about abortion, but about the sanctity of all stages of human life.

On Monday, the group travels to Brussels, Belgium, to begin a 150-mile walk to the World Youth Day in Germany.

Erin O’Mahoney, a participant from New Jersey, commented, “This summer has been an amazing summer. We have had to overcome many obstacles, some external, some internal, but we have made it to Washington. Next Stop: World Youth Day.”
