'Crown and Council' News: Mojang Just Released a New Game and It's Totally Free

Without any warning or fanfare whatsoever, Swedish game developer Mojang, the developer that gave the world the uber-popular exploration game "Minecraft," released a strategy game called "Crown and Council." According to a report in The Verge, the game is described as "a fast-paced strategy game about conquering land and obliterating rival monarchs." And it's available to download for free on Steam.

Those who have played the game describe it as a game that looks a bit like "Civilization" but more pixelated and smaller in scope. Players need to build up their empire by raising money, building up their own naval and military force and of course, getting their hands on vast tracts of land.

The game was developed by only one member of the Mojang team, Henrik Pettersson. It was a result of a game jam – an event where game developers and designers come together to create small and short games based on a pre-identified theme – after which Mojang decided to refine the game further and ready it for public release.

According to a report in BGR, players who have tried out the game noted that there can be buggy clicking and that matches can have random outcomes. However, it also cited that the game can be addicting as well, with an invitation for players to conquer lands and "obliterate" other empires in the process. Being a short game, it can draw gamers who are interested in a quick win or a series of quick wins, if they have more time in their hands.

In a blog post, Mojang claims that it may look simple to play, as it only requires quick-clicking, but it is "not quite so easy to win." Strategy is important especially on how one spends the resources of the empire: "Do you spend all your cash on universities, hoping to survive long enough that your book-learnin' makes you unstoppable in the late game? Or do you go for a quick land-grab, hoping to put enough boots on the ground to give you an irreversible early advantage?"
