The side scrolling platform video game "Cuphead" aims to revive the 1930s style of animation through its nostalgic yet refreshing visual aesthetics. The game was originally slated for a 2016 release on the Xbox One and PC platforms. However, game developer Studio MDHR had just announced that "Cuphead" will not meet the expected deadline.

The studio posted a blog post stating that they initially wanted to finish "Cuphead" 80 years after 1936, but it will now be 81 years. This statement now sets the release date of the game to 2017, a good 81 years after the tribute date. The blog post then continued by stating that for so long, Studio MDHR wanted to cut off the scope of "Cuphead" to meet the 2016 release. However, they made the tough call of delaying the game in favor of keeping the original vision intact.

Delay History

As disappointing as it may be, this is not the first time that "Cuphead" has been delayed. When the game was announced on January 2014, the developers promised an ambitious release date set later that same year. However, when the game was showcased in E3 later that year, the developer had announced the game to be delayed to 2015. The reasoning behind this is that "Cuphead" has now become a full-pledged platform game, instead of being just a retro run and gun game.

The hand-drawn visual style of "Cuphead" made it understandable for fans to absorb the delays. The original 1936 tribute bears significance as it was when the Japanese propaganda film the game was based on had been released. It was about a teacup that eventually turned into a cup. The dreamlike and surrealistic feel of this film will be making its way to "Cuphead".

After the E3 2014 delay announcement, there had been another setback, marking the release date of "Cuphead" in 2016. This was then attributed to the developers' wanting to deliver the best possible game to the players. Also, as the visuals would be hand-drawn, the graphics alone are consuming a lot of time.

With both mainstream and independent video games such as "Cuphead" being delayed almost every year, fans have high hopes for the actual game to be released. The standards have also been raised for the game, as the developers have now had more time to ultimately perfect it.
