Chaz Bono’s addition to the new cast of “Dancing with the Stars” has proven to be a controversial move that has been praised by some, but has also angered a large number of fans. Amid the controversy, Cher has taken to Twitter today to accuse those of not supporting Chaz’s inclusion in the show as “stupid bigots.”
Cher urged fans to support Chaz, who she said was being “viciously attacked” on blogs and message boards.
She tweeted, “This is still America right? I support him no matter what he chooses 2do!”
“God! Will there always be haters! It took COURAGE 2 do dwts! TG Chaz has an Unlimited supply,” Cher added.
The 65-year-old singer wrote, “Mothers don’t stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who [mess] with their children!”
Bono, 42, who legally changed his gender and age last year, will be the show’s first transgender contestant. DWTS fans have posted both angry and supportive comments on the show’s message boards.
“Shame on all of you who have anything negative to say about Chaz. He was born transgender, and is a brave soul for being true to himself. I applaud him for his courage,” wrote Kidsrppl2.
faithplusnothing said, “ABC has always been pro gay even their FAMILY channel was given high marks by GLAAD. This should come as no surprise. I'm glad I don't find anything worth watching on either channel. This show has jumped the shark...”
Others like Monkeylover2293 do not agree: “ok people, get OVER it! Chaz Bono is going to be on the show and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with it! I support you all the way Chaz! Ignore the haters!”
Leeallen8310 said she was disappointed in “ABC for the decision to cast Chaz. I feel as though the media continues to push the limits and boundaries and throw junk in our faces, trying to force liberalism down our throats. I'm so sick of it. I love the show, but I absolutely refuse to watch this season.”
Chaz Bono spoke out on Twitter, saying he was the “luckiest guy around” and that he was “overwhelmed by the outpouring of support” he received from everyone.
He also thanked Cher.
“Thanks for all your support mom. The haters are just motivating me to work harder and stay on DWTS as long as I possibly can,” he tweeted.
