During his appearance on Stewart's show, Barton, author of The Jefferson Lies: Exposing the Myths You've Always Believed About Thomas Jefferson, argued that Thomas Jefferson was a "nondenominational" Christian and not the secularist that historians make him out to be. He also believes that America was founded as a Christian nation.

Stewart asked Barton why Christians feel they are persecuted when the majority of Americans are Christians. Barton explained that Christians are targeted for their faith, pointing to cases where Christians can't hand out Bibles or an elementary school child can't pray over his lunch.
