'Dawn Treader' Earns $96.7M Worldwide

December 16, 2010|6:05 pm

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" performed twice as well overseas than it did at home, grossing $43.9 million this past weekend in international theaters.

The movie, shown in 8,343 locations abroad, took the top spot in at least 41 markets, with Russia leading the list, posting a $10.9 million debut.

Mexico raked in $7.3 million and France opened with $6.3 million. South Korea brought in $5.3 million.

In the United Kingdom, the Walden Media/Fox 2000 Pictures co-production fizzled, bringing in $3.9 million, less than half of what "Prince Caspian" brought in.

The latest figures bring Narnia's worldwide earnings to a total of $96.7 million.

At the domestic box office, "Dawn Treader" opened at number one but took in an underwhelming $24.5 million.

"Prince Caspian" earned double that amount when it hit theaters in the summer of 2008.

The blockbuster of the Narnia franchise remains "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" which was slotted in the 2005 Christmas season. The first Narnia movie installment pocketed $65.5 million during its opening weekend, eventually earning $291.7 million at domestic markets.

Disney helped produced "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and "Prince Caspian" but severed the partnership with Walden after their last project posted disappointing results.

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" will open theaters in Germany and Italy this weekend.
