The annual "Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem," which occurs the first Sunday of every October and brings together millions of people praying for the Holy City, is to be the biggest prayer event of its kind, according to organizers.

"It is the largest Jerusalem-focused prayer initiative in history with over 1,400 Christian leaders endorsing and over 300,000 congregations in more than 175 nations, which includes the underground churches in China and seven Muslim countries," explained Miriam Rodlyn Park, global co-coordinator for the event, in an email to The Christian Post.

The organization first started meeting in 2002 with leading political and religious leaders from Israel and the United States, building up to what is now the largest prayer movement of its kind, with coordinators in 175 nations and over 1,400 key leaders within the evangelical Christian world giving their support.

What is also new about the prayer event this year is the launch of the KeepTree.com website that allows Christians to send free prayer videos to people in Israel. In addition, people in Israel will be able to directly view the recorded prayers made for them on the website.

"The first response in any situation is always prayer. That is, Christians around the world, from all denominations and ages, are mobilizing to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. While other activities are productive and important, prayer is the foundation and power behind any real change for good," Park continued.

Dave Butts of America's National Prayer Committee added: "There is no more urgent call to the whole body of Christ than the 'Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.' This prayer movement blends the dynamic of tomorrow's headlines with the imperative of praying God's Word back to Him."

The event is also being aided by Eagle's Wings, a global Christian ministry whose mission is to build bridges across faith communities, and "to bring the world the message of hope that comes from the God of love, to train the next generation of Christian leaders, and to unite and empower believers to make a positive difference in the world around them."

The event website, DayToPray.com, insists that it is important to support Israel because at its inception, the church was entirely Jewish, and remained so until the Gospel began to spread around the world.

"Scripture declares there will come a time when all the nations of the world will turn against Israel. It is so highly conceivable this could happen in our time that it is crucial to outline why we should stand with Israel today," the website adds.

DayToPray.com also includes information about how individuals and organizations can get involved in the major prayer event on Oct. 7.
