Without releasing any major spoilers, Gunn dropped the news there will be a lot less characters in the sequel as last year's summer sleeper hit segues into a deeper look into Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket's characters. This makes "GotG 2" a departure from the trend where other comic book-based franchises have been cramming characters into their films to add novelty.

Gunn also admitted he cut a major character from the sequel to keep the story from becoming "too busy." He did not reveal who the major character was, however.

Speculations surrounding "GotG 2" indicate the sequel may introduce Star-Lord's father. Gunn confirmed this information, but said the actor playing Peter's absentee dad hasn't been cast yet, and will likely be announced next year.

Fans who enjoyed Peter Quill's mix tape soundtrack, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, will also be delighted to learn the "Awesome Mix Vol. 2" has already been compiled for the sequel.

According to Gunn, apart from the five Guardians: Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Rocket (Bradley Cooper), three other core members from the original movie are returning to reprise their roles: Nebula (Karen Gillan), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Kraglin (Sean Gunn).

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has been set for release in July 28, 2017.
