'Guardians of the Galaxy' 2 Sequel News: Director James Gunn - 'We Are Not Subservient to the Avengers'

James Gunn, the director to one of this year's biggest blockbuster films, recently spoke in a podcast interview with Jeff Goldsmith and talked about the position of "Guardians of the Galaxy" in the Marvel Universe.

Both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and its upcoming sequel will have their "own separate universe" and that it "isn't all about leading towards" Avengers and its respective sequels, the director said.

"The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. It isn't all about leading towards Avengers. We're not subservient to The Avengers," Gunn continued.

"Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it's two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now … I'm not going to say. But 'Guardians of the Galaxy' does not exist as a prequel to 'Avengers 3' and '4,'" he stated. "They have their own thing that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important."

Apparently, Gunn's ideals are for both the Marvel entities to step into their own limelight by utilizing their own materials and not depending on each other's popularity.

"I don't want to make everything too small by focusing on this other thing. I think it's about making this world and this universe as big and as beautiful as possible," he said.

This is the second time around in which the director established the point that "his corner of the MCU" isn't entirely designed to "set up" Infinity War and its succeeding installments despite the fact that both franchises featured Thanos.

For the meantime, "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" will hit the theater on May 1, 2015. "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," on the other hand, is said to arrive in the big screen on May 5, 2017.
