Disney Teams Up With Gospel Rescue Missions to Launch Unique Homelessness 'Sock Initiative'

July 13, 2012|6:37 pm

The Association of Gospel Rescue Missions is partnering with Walt Disney Studios and Hanes to provide socks for the homeless. The drive will be held in conjunction with the release of "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," which premieres on August 15.

Homelessness is a significant problem in the United States, affecting nearly 3.5 million Americans. Approximately 1.35 million of those persons are children, which is why the AGRM and Disney Studios are working to raise awareness.

"Families will undoubtedly be warmed by the touching storyline of the movie, and 'neighbors' in need will certainly be touched by the warm socks that viewers donate," explained AGRM President John Ashmen. "Many of the infirmities that homeless people bear are actually born in their feet because of all the walking and standing they do."

"New socks - clean, dry, and without holes - will go a long way to provide comfort and care for the men, women, and children who are desperate for assistance from those who can help," Ashmen added.

Disney's new film "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" tells the story of a young couple who wish for a child. A little boy named Timothy shows up on their front door and changes their lives forever. According to the studio, the couple and their community "learn that sometimes the unexpected can bring some of life's greatest gifts."

The AGRM is a collaboration of over 275 rescue missions in North America that serves 50 million meals and provides 27 million pieces of clothing and bandages to the homeless. Hanes has offered to supply 10,000 pairs of socks to the organization, which will bring much-needed protection and comfort.

Anyone interested in donating socks may do so at Carmike and Marcus theaters or other community locations between now and Sept. 3.
